Plastic offsets program

Our plastic offset program helps you make an immediate impact on plastic pollution while building a movement to create a world without trashy dining. You can earn plastic offsets by leaving reviews, feedback, and taking photos of your dine-in and takeout experiences on the PlasticScore app.

To provide the offsets, PlasticScore, in partnership with rePurpose, pays for the ethical collection of low value plastics around the world. We make purchases to offset your plastic waste on a quarterly basis. Find all of our purchase confirmations here.

How it works

• Download the PlasticScore App!

• Go out to eat or get takeout from your favorite restaurants

• Earn plastic offsets by leaving reviews, feedback, and taking photos of your dine-in and takeout experiences

  • For every review you leave, we'll recover 0.25 lbs worth of plastic waste from the environment

    • One takeout order’s worth of waste is approximately 0.25 lbs (based on the rePurpose footprint survey)

    • Since we’re recovering a takeout order’s worth of waste, if you’re given all single-use items you’ll fully offset it.

    • Even better, every time you go to restaurants that give you less waste, we’ll be pulling out more plastic than is being put in!

  • Leaving feedback for a restaurant at the end of a review earns another 0.05 lbs in offsets

  • Every photo earns 0.05 lbs in offsets

• Track your impact on your PlasticScore user profile to see how much plastic you’ve recovered compared to how much you’ve received from restaurants.

The nitty gritty

• Offsets are earned just for the reviewer - even if there was more than one person listed as diners in the review.

  • Don’t worry! Your friends and family can earn their own offsets by downloading PlasticScore and leaving their own review.

• The “Plastic Generated” statistic on your user profile isn’t purely a count of plastic items - but instead a calculation that includes single-use items of other materials types as well

  • The calculation is done for just a single reviewer - so it doesn’t factor in waste generated by other people included in the review.

  • Rather than adding up all the item counts and weights, the calculation is a linear relationship based off of the PlasticScore for each experience

    • 1.0 PlasticScore = 0.25 lbs generated (an all single-use takeout order equivalent)

    • 5.0 PlasticScore = 0 lbs generated

    • The equation for the math people out there:

      • (Plastic Generated) = -0.0625 * (PlasticScore) + 0.3125

  • We decided to use this methodology, instead of adding up counts and weights, since the latter calculation would get complicated with different masses of materials types (i.e. aluminum vs. styrofoam).

  • The PlasticScore already factors in the different environmental aspects of these materials, so it is the best proxy to get to an equivalent “Plastic Generated” statistic that we can use as a comparison to your plastic recovery numbers.
